Born to James Evans Sr., and Helen Watkins. He liked to tell his grandkids that he met Clark Gable at the "Gone With the Wind" premiere in Atlanta in 1939.

According to James, he graduated from the University of Georgia in the 1950's with a degree in architecture. Upon visiting a friend (Lucy) in Dallas, he met his future wife, Charm Galloway-Miller. They married in 1969, and returned to live in the surrounding Atlanta cities. They have no kids, but she had kids from a previous marriage (Johnny, Craig, Michael Miller). Both of them spent the remaining two years of their lives living in a nursing home in Durant, Oklahoma near their family.
