Betty Porth died Sunday, August 17, 2003, of a stroke, one day after her 88th birthday. Surviving her at the time of her death are her five children, Yvonne White of Tallahassee, Florida; Vernon Porth (Diane) of Darwin; Lowell Porth (passed in 2011) of Hutchinson; Laurie Bauck (Philip)of Milaca; and Lyndon of Shakopee. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; three brothers, Carl Puckett, Albert Puckett, and David Puckett, and two sisters, Pearl Walton, and Virginia Larson. She was preceded in death by her husband, George.

Betty Puckett was born in Morristown, South Dakota, on August 16, 1915. She had lived in Darwin since about 1935. In 1937 she married George Porth. In 1959 George and Betty bought the Darwin Freezer Service, which George had managed since 1945. Darwin Freezer is still a family-owned Darwin landmark,now owned by Betty's son Vern Porth. Grandson Kenny Porth recently joined the business, making the third generation of Porths in the business. In a recent interview in local newspapers, Betty summed up her own life by saying, "I'm the big boss."

Betty was a charter member of the All Saints Lutheran Church in Darwin, where she was a member at the time of her death. Betty was very active in the establishment and development of the Darwin Community club and the Darwin Historical Museum. She greatly enjoyed her lawn and flower gardens, as well as the annual Twine Ball Days activities. She, along with George, was actively involved in the civic life of Darwin for over 50 years, and was loved in the community.
