Cemetery notes and/or description:
The last burial in the cemetery was 1856. After years of neglect, the cemetery grounds were sold to the Butler School Board. Over seven hundred graves were removed from this old cemetery and of this number only eighty-three could be identified by means of a tombstone or other mark. Those identified included the names of many families who are among the first settlers of the borough and of the county. A plot with the graves marked may be seen at the office of the superintendent of public schools of the city in the Senior High School building. A similar plot of the ground purchased by the school board in the North Cemetery with all of the graves properly marked is also on file at the same place.

The old Butler High School was built on the site of the Old Butler Cemetery 1908.

A story is told that the evening before the tombstones were removed that a Doctor who lived next door to the old Cemetery wrote down all the markings to identify all stones. This is a very detailed list.

I was told at all coffins, tombstones and bones removed were thrown in a large pit at the North Cemetery.
