Mr. Barksdale, 85, of Columbus, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at The Windsor Place Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born March 17, 1924 in Memphis, Tenn. to the late Raymond D. Barksdale Sr. and Suzie Hardaway Barksdale. He was a dedicated member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, an U.S. Army Aircorp World War II veteran, and a member of the American Legion T.S. Patterson Post 69. He retired from the Columbus Public School System in 1986, where he had served as supervisor of school services since 1962, and was a charter member of the Mississippi School Food Service Association and served as its first president in 1957, and again in 1968. From 1980 to 1982 he served as national treasurer for that same organization. He was also a longtime member of the Columbus Exchange Club and served as its president in 1970 and 1971. He also served as the treasurer for the Lowndes County 4-H Club and served on the Board of Directors for the Lowndes County Chapter of the American Red Cross in 1989.
Survivors include his daughter, Malinda Bivens and her husband Harry, of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Raymond D. Barksdale III and his wife Sharon, of Amory; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Eugene Barksdale and his wife Agnes, of Hattiesburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 32 years, Walterine Beason Barksdale. Pallbearers will be Eric Barksdale, Tyler Barksdale, and ushers from St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Visitation will be Sunday, from 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. at the church.
