Obituary for Ogden Rankin
Conway...O. A. "Rock" Rankin, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Brightwater Memory Care.
Rock was born in Loris, a son of the late Harry Wilson and Martha Allsbrook Rankin.

He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Following a tour in the U.S. Navy, he attended USC law school, graduating in 1951. In 1952 he moved to Conway where he began practicing law, in a solo practice, then as Rankin and Johnson, in partnership with W.T. "Tim" Johnson. In 1975 he became Horry County Judge, then as Special Circuit Court Judge serving until 1979, when he returned to private practice. In 1991, his son Luke joined the practice, forming Rankin and Rankin, where he served 'Of Counsel' until his full retirement. Rock was a member of First Baptist Conway, a former Mason, former member and Past President of the Conway Rotary Club and the Elk's Club. Rock was Chairman of the Horry County Democratic Party from 1960 until 1971.
He enjoyed his family, grandchildren, traveling, and playing bridge. He was described by a local writer as a "Collector of People" who truly enjoyed meeting people, bringing them together and introducing strangers to each other. As a Trial Judge he was well known to encourage juror participation by inviting them to bring in homemade baked goods for the jury pool and court to share.

Rock was predeceased by four brothers, John, Joe, Wilson and Watson Rankin, a son-in-law, Micah LaRoche.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated staff of Brightwater Memory Care and Heartland Hospice for their love and care.
Rock is survived by his beautiful and loving wife of 60 1/2 years, Dorothy Sadler Rankin, four children, Lela Schoeck (Joachim), Harriet LaRoche, Mark Rankin (Beth) and Luke Rankin (Lindsey). He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren, Anna Schoeck, Brook LaRoche, Sadler, Martha, Luke and Hollings Rankin and two great grandchildren, Sophie and Chloe and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Robert Guffey officiating. Private graveside services will be held at Lakeside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Saturday at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, 603 Elm Street, Conway, SC 29526.
