Alva attended an agricultural school in Bowenburg, Illinois, graduating there in 1872 at age 14. He then returned to California, living in Sonoma County, then Alameda and El Dorado counties and finally Sacramento, where he died. During the course of his life, he worked as a saleman, porter, miner, fruit grower and farmer. He also served as a judge and inspector for the local Board of Elections.
Alva was an exceptionally strong man. An article appeared in the "Oakland Daily Evening Tribune" (Oakland, CA) on April 25, 1885, entitled "Brooklyn Athletes - A Splendid Exhibition Last Evening- Remarkable Feats of Strength and Agility--A. Hylton Beats the World Record." Alva Hylton elevated the bell 91 times beating the world record!
