Elijah Alley Bills was the son of Joseph Bills and Emeline Reynolds. His middle name Alley came from the surname of his paternal grandmother, Martha Ann Alley Bills. Most of these folks weren't literate unless it was their job to be, so the letter "E" wound up on his headstone instead of "A". All of his other documents have "A". The same problem occurs on his mother Emeline's headstone.
