Juan was born in Juarez, Mexico, before his mother moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he grew up. Juan was drafted by the Selective Service Board #7 of Las Cruces and when he presented himself at the induction office in El Paso, Texas, 23 February 1966, he was inducted into the Marines.
When Juan arrived in Vietnam, he was assigned to 1st Platoon of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Cumberland when Bravo Company engaged hostile forces 16 kilometers southwest of the Hue Citadel. Juan died as a result multiple gunshot wounds to both legs, back and chest from hostile automatic weapons fire.

Survived by his step-father and mother, Cenon and Bernardine Ballesteros and his sister; Consuelo Zamora, all of 975 East Amador, Las Cruces, New Mexico.∼Juan, was the son of Bernardina Ballesteros, dear brother of Consuelo Zamora and the stepson of Cenon Ballesteros of Las Cruces New Mexico. He entered service, (Selected Service) in the US Marine Corps on February 23, 1966 in El Paso Texas and in Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
During the month of July the 1st Battalion CP was located along Route 547 in the Nam Hoa District of Thu Thein Province and participated in Operation CUMBERLAND. For a ten day period from July 7 to July 16 the Battalion was deployed to northern Quang Tri Province and participated in Operation BUFFALO and HICKORY II, returning to continue CUMBERLAND.
On July 18, a Marine patrol in the vicinity of the Binh Dien village complex along Route 589 engaged the VC. The enemy opened fire at the Marines and Cpl Juan Zamora was killed by multiple gunshot wounds from the hostile rifle fire.
