J.D. McDuffie was one of the last independents of NASCAR. He was one of the few drivers who showed up for every race, with just one car, and tried to qualify with limited resources, simply because he loved racing. Although he never won in NASCAR competition, his spirit and detirmination made him a fan favorite.

On August 11, 1991, McDuffie was running a Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen International Raceway, when on the fifth lap, he lost control of his car and collided with fellow driver Jimmy Means and the two crashed into a tire barrier, with McDuffie flipping on top of Means' car. Means made it out unscathed, but McDuffie did not survive the accident.
