Joseph immigrated to America in 1853 with his first wife, Theresa (nee Fischer) and their first two children. They went on to have three more children before Theresa died 23 June 1869

"Joseph Hutterer, an aged pioneer, passed away at his home here Friday morning at the age of 93 years. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. Deceased was one of the first to settle in this vicinity and was one of the few pioneers that we had left us. He was the father of five children, one son and four daughters. The son died many years ago. One of the daughters lives in Sheboygan and three live in Green Bay."
