Sarah was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Shepherd) Coltman.

She was born between 1815 and 1820 (say 1817) at Ohio or Virginia.

She married Lewis Powers c.Sep 1840, as his 2nd wife, as he appears to be unmarried in the 1840 census, but their 1st child was probably born in Aug 1841.

She had 2 children (surviving childhood):
1. Mary E. (Powers) Maine (1841–1902)
2. John Wesley Powers (1845–1915)

She died after her 2nd child was born, probably Jan 1845, but before 21 Jan 1849 when her widower married, as his 3rd wife, Minerva (Nelson) Smith at Whitley County, Indiana.

It seems likely she would have been buried at the Coltman Cemetery, but no record, gravestone, or other evidence has been found.

Evidence that she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Shepherd) Coltman is as follows:

In the 1830 and 1840 censuses, it appears that Joseph and Mary (Shepherd) Coltman had a daughter born 1815–1820, not otherwise identified.

In 1850, her daughter, Mary E., was enumerated with Mary A. (Coltman) Thomas — apparently her sister.

In 1850 and 1860, her son, John Wesley, was enumerated with Joseph and Mary (Shepherd) Coltman — apparently her parents.

She is named as "Sarah Coltman" in a biography of her step-son Joseph Lewis Powers (Benjamin F. Gue and Benjamin F. Shambaugh, Biographies and Portraits of the Progressive Men of Iowa: Leaders in Business, Politics and the Professions: Together with an Original and Authentic History of the State, 2 vols., (Des Moines, Iowa: Conaway & Shaw, 1899), 2: 370–372).

Finally, though perhaps merely coincidentally, there are some common names in both families. Sarah's son John Wesley Powers (born Jan 1845) could have been named after his uncle John Wesley Coltman who was born in Apr 1832. And in 1857 or 1858, George Coltman could have named his son Lewis after his late sister's husband Lewis Powers.
