Leroy L. Brett was mustered into the Confederate Army May 6, 1861 at Grove Hill, Clarke County, Alabama. He served in the 5th Alabama Inf Co I. Leroy was captured at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. He was received at Ft. Delaware Union Prison July 7, 1863. After arriving at Ft. Delaware all records cease.
Leroy was married to Susan Brett, in 1857 and at age 22 left for war. Records show two children:

James Henry Brett 1859-1961
Lucy Ellen Brett Holden 1861-

Leroy's son James lived past the age of 100 and talked of his father and the war ofen in his later years. Mystery surrounds Leroy's fate as James told stories of VIVIDLY remembering his father retuning home wounded in the right foot only to return to be killed at the seige of Richmond in the final weeks of the war. Leroy and Susan had seven known grand children.

A recent discovery of Susan's Confederate pension application gives credance to Leroy's son's story that his father died in the final days of the war having escaped or been exchanged from Ft. Delaware.
