Services for Lavon Hicks, 81, of Wells, Texas, will be held at O.T. Allen Funeral Home in Alto, Texas. Reverend Horace Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow at Old Palestine Cemetery Alto, Texas.
Lavon was born May 12, 1932 to George Pickens Creel and Emily Gertrude Cook Creel in Alto, Texas and died April 26, 2014 in Wells, Texas. She was the youngest of eleven children.
Growing up she attended school in Alto, Texas. In 1947, Lavon married Tom Ed Tobias and together they had two sons, Tommy and Edward. She became a widow and mother of two children by 1949 when Tom Ed tragically drown in a pond while seining for fish with family. Later, in 1950, she married Earl Hicks and together they shared 27 years of marriage and had two children, Jackie and Judy. While being a busy and loving mother of four, Lavon continued her education at Massey Business College. She was first employed by Rusk State Hospital as a secretary and later as a secretary at Hicks Feed Mill in Alto, Texas. She was also a waitress at two local restaurants. Although raised in the faith of Seventh Day Adventist, she attended Primrose Baptist Church in Alto, Texas. She was a volunteer 4-H leader and served as room mother many times during her children's elementary school years. She enjoyed family gatherings and baking and loved being Mamaw Hicks, 'Heck', to all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Lavon was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom Ed Tobias; infant son and daughter; son, Jackie Hicks; son, Edward Tobias; two grandsons; one great grandson; and two great-great grandsons.
She leaves to treasure her precious memory and continue her legacy: a daughter, Judy Montes, and husband, T. Wayne Montes of Wells, Texas; a son, Tommy Tobias of Wells, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.
