The son of John and Agatha B. Bernardine Nierengarden attended Xavier High School. He entered Columbia University in 1941. During 1943, his sophomore year at Colombia University, he left for military service.

Lt. Nierengarden was assigned to the 8th Air Force, as a Navigator on B-17G Flying Fortress #42-31630, “Pakawalup”, that crashed in bad weather over Alconbury, England on 19 Feb. 1945. Lt. Nierengarden and the entire crew perished. He had been overseas for five months.

Lt. Nierengarden’s funeral notice appeared in the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper on 3 Aug. 1948.
