Bill was known to "never meet a stranger" - he was cordial and friendly to all he came across. My personal experience that is emblazoned in my mind -- the day of the Oklahoma City bombing, April 19, 1995. My dad had come to Indiana from Florida...on his way to Maine. He and my mother coming to Indiana to see family on the "detour". Dad came in to see me on his 66th birthday at a pub where I was bartender, on the day they got in town -4/19/95. I remember wondering what would happen, as my father sat down at the bar next to a friend/regular, that was a self proclaimed "Gay, Black, Republican". As the events of the day, the bombing, the search and rescue, the realization of the nursery, etc, unfolded, their conversation flowed. I think my dad, I believe to have been a Republican, made a friend. My friend, Hezekiah Hill, made a friend. I was once again "wowed" at the power of just being yourself - and not "putting on airs". I truly thought their meeting would end badly, but I just didn't know my dad as well as I thought. Glad to have that day in my Happy Memory Box.
