Marvell Willis Newman (Lynn) was born to William Orville Newman and Lillian Henning Newman of Gulfport, Mississippi in 1899. She was born into a large and distinguished family of Confederate veterans and her father was a contractor. Family tradition holds that they lived in a large house on the Gulf. Other Family tradition states that her ancestors founded a large plantation in Mississippi called "pantherbern." One ancestor lost a leg during the Civil War.

She Married Billie Lynn after World War I. They were married in Long Beach , Mississippi by the local Methodist Pastor. The newspaper article reporting the wedding called Miss Marvell Newman "one of Gulfport's attractive young ladies....." The article goes on to state that her husband, Billie Lynn, had a position with the Seaboard Air Line Railroad.

The couple moved to Jackson Mississippi where their first two children were born, William Thomas Lynn in 1921 and Jack Kyte Lynn in 1923. (They are both buried in Mt. Kenton cemetery.) The third Child, Charles H. Lynn, Sr. was born in Paducah in 1930. He became a Methodist Minister and is buried in Memorial Gardens in Memphis, Tenn.

She lived with her husband Billie Lynn at 1720 Monroe Ave. in Paducah for many years. Billie Lynn was a journeyman mechanic at the Illinois Central Railroad shops for many years. She worked as a LPN for many years at the Illinois Central RR Hospital. She worked during WWII at the munitions plant.

She was my grandmother and a very special lady. I remember her taking me to Noble park many times and taking care of me over the years. She was a loving and caring Grandmother. She was also a wonderful cook and made the old south come alive. She was a very special person.

I still remember the trips to the thriving downtown of Paducah in the 1950's to shop and look around. I will always miss her.

Marvell Newman Lynn died after an extended illness at the old Lourdes Hospital in Paducah on July 24th, 1965.
