Doreta D. Dixon Jackson, 98, died Feb. 4, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 4, 1909, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Wheeler and Louise Odom Dinkins.
She attended Sumter County public schools. She was a farmer and was employed by Shaw Air Force Base. She was a member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church. After moving to Mayesville, she became a member of Ebenezer AME Church, where she served on the Stewardess Board and the Missionary Society. After moving back to Horatio, she rejoined Rafting Creek and became active with the Missionary Society, until her health failed.
Survivors include one niece, Priscilla (Thomas) Frame of Virginia; one nephew, Bill (Barbara) Elliot of Sumter; one loving daughter-in-law, Frances N. Dixon of the home; one grandson raised like a son, Wilbur Jerome Dixon; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one grandniece, Alethia (Jerome) of Manning; one grandnephew, Robie McKnight; and a host of other grandnieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward Dixon and Pompey Jackson; a son, Wilbur Dixon; four sisters; two brothers; two nephews; and one grandson.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 8, 2007, at Rafting Creek Baptist Church, Rembert, with the Rev. Melvin Mack, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lillian Reynolds and the Rev. A.M. Bonner. Burial was in Rafting Creek Cemetery, Rembert.
