May 8, 1945 Cleveland Plain Dealer:
Four Clevelanders Die as War Points West
A war may end when men sign surrender papers and lay down their arms at the cease firing order, but all the heartbreak and the grief do not stop at that moment. Last night, in the midst of joyous news of V-E Day, five Greater Cleveland homes received these messages; a soldier killed in beaten Germany and four others wounded in battle. And as if to emphasize that even though the Germans had surrendered to Allied arms, there was still a bitter war to be fought and won in the Pacific, three of those wounded fell in that theater. The complete list of the dead: Pvt. Norman F. Makowski, 24, son of Mrs. Augusta Makowski, 2204 Barber Avenue SW killed April 7 in Germany. Pvt. Makowski, an infantryman, was graduated from West Technical High School and worked at the Thompson Aircraft Products Co. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Lois.
