Claire C. Bell was born in Buffalo, New York on January 17, 1912, the daughter of James Collins and Sarah Murphy Collins. Her father was known as Jimmy Collins who was the coach for the Boston Pilgrims when they won the first World Series in 1903. He was in was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, in 1947. She attended Canisius College in upstate New York. In 1930 she married George McCall. She was a real estate agent in Cazenovia, New York. In 1970 she married Ret. Major General William Bell and they later moved to Florida. In Florida she became active in politics, first as a county commissioner and later as the second female Mayor of Longboat Key, serving two terms in that position. She recently moved to the Monarch Center in Saco, Maine due to ill health. She died at age 93 on Thursday evening, September 29, 2005. She was predeceased by her first husband, George McCall in 1965; her second husband, Ret. Major General William Bell, in 1996 and one son, Peter McCall in 1999. Survivors included three sons, Richard McCall [1931-2006] of Glen Gardiner, New Jersey, son of Fayetteville, New York and son of Scarborough, Maine; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Local arrangements were by Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main Street, Saco Maine. A memorial service was held at the United States Military Academy Cemetery at West Point, New York. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested donations to St. Martha's Catholic Church, 200 North Orange Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34236.
