Alice Byrd Appleton Smith
Born in Berwyn, IL July 9, 1907, the daughter of Ernest and Ethyl Lou (Messer) Appleton, died March 7, 1996 in Tucson.
Mem. Services Fri., Mar. 15 at 3:00 p.m. St. Andrews Presb. Church, 750 W. Chapala Dr., Tcsn 85704.
Mrs. Smith was a civic worker and charitable activist in both Mpls and Tucson. She was pres. Women's Symphony Ass., Mpls, MN 1965-1967; secretary Center Opera Ass., Mpls, MN 65-67, v.p. 68-69, pres. 72-73; past member of Mpls Institute of Arts and Friends of the Institute; past Corporate Tr. Northwestern Hosp. and TB Walker Fdn - both in Mpls, MN; recipient Pres. Roosevelt Award for Am. Red Cross Service during WWII; Wayzata, MN Congregational Church - past member and deaconess 64-66. Recognized for her accomplishments in Marquis's Who's Who of American Women in the 70 s.
After moving in the late 60 s as a winter resident and later as a permanent resident to Tucson, Alice Appleton Crawford Smith became a member of the St. Andrews Presb. Church in Tucson where she established the Alice A. Smith educational fund for financial support and aid to further the college education of Christian children.
During WWII she and her family were known in the Mpls area for the families weekend open house policy for US military personnel stationed in Mpls and St. Paul, MN area.

(2) Justin V. Smith 8/27/58 and
(3) Dana C. Smith 1983 (Justin's older brother)
after Justin's accidental death in 1979.
Survived by Carroll Crawford, Wayzata, MN, Richard Crawford, Tucson, Rodney Crawford, Carefree, AZ and 14 grandchildren. Interment and Memorial Services to be scheduled in Mpls, MN.
The family request that memorials in Tucson be directed to Catalina Foothills Church, 4626 E. Ft. Lowell, Suite F, Tucson, 85712 or the Alice A. Smith Educational Fund, St. Andrews Presb. Church.
