Woonsocket's last veteran of the G.A.R . Capt. Thomas A Buell, who was also the city's oldest Mason, died last night at Truesdale Hospital, Fall River. He was in his 92nd year and was the only member of Smith Post, G.A.R.
Capt. Buell was active in banking circles in Woonsocket for 43 years. He was director of the National Globe Bank for 37 years and served as it's president for 17 years. For 28 years he was a trustee of the Mechanics Savings Bank. He became a member of the board of managers of the Woonsocket branch when the two banks were absorbed by the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company.
The Mason Manufacturing Company, makers of soap, was owned and operated by Mr. Buell from 1879 to 1895. Until a few years ago he was stock holder in the Woonsocket Call. In 1895 when the present ownership obtained control of the newspaper he acted as it's financial backer for several years.
Mr. Buell was born in Pawtucket, Sept. 15, 1843, the son of Albert and Nancy (Noyes) Buell. He enlisted to fight in the Civil War in 1861 but his father got him out of the service because he was under age. The following year he succeeded in becoming a member of Company B. Ninth Rhode Island Regiment. He settled in Woonsocket in 1868.
