Zephaniah Dowden, Sr was a Revolutionary War Veteran, (Private, 3rd Company, Middle Battalion, Militia, Montgomery County, Maryland, September 1777). He was also part of the Indiana Militia in 1812.

One of the original settlers of Jackson County, he settled there in the Driftwood Township area in about 1806. He was appointed a "Road Supervisor" in 1808. He is listed in the Census as a Blacksmith. He is listed in the History of Jackson County as one of the people responsible for establishing the new county from Clark County.
