Ruth was the daughter of Theodore "Frank" Snyder and Elizabeth "Libbie" Cole. She was a high school math teacher in several school districts, and received her master's degree from Columbia University after retirement.

She was the second (possibly third) wife of William Marcus Curtis, but divorced after the mid-1920s.
