Jane was the daughter of James and Nancy (née Lanning) McIntyre; in 1835 (age 4) she was amongst those enumerated at the James "McEntyre" residence in the town of Bath, New York, where her mother's Lanning relatives were neighbors. Later—as evidenced in more detailed mid-century census records—the young wife of Alfred B. Armstrong was sometimes referred to as Elizabeth Jane, commemorating her late paternal grandmother Elizabeth (née Jones) MacIntire.
In 1850, Jane's parents and some of her siblings were still close by when she, Alfred and their infant son Edwin (the first of six children, q.v.) were living with her husband's parents in Avoca, New York. By 1860, when the Alfred Armstrong family was enumerated at Scio, Allegany County, New York, Jane's parents resided in the neighboring town of Wellsville. Within the decade, however, the McIntyres headed westward to Brant, Saginaw County, Michigan, where they lived out their days; both James and Nancy survived their daughter, passing in 1882 and 1884 respectively.
Jane endured the loss of three children, but did live to welcome the births of three grandchildren before her untimely death.
Rest in peace Grandmother.
