John Byars, Jr., was the son of Capt. John Byars and Elizabeth Thomason. Catherine Eva Patterson in her notes on our grandparents (1985) writes: "Although George Byars brothers, Col. William Williams and John Byars with their mother, Elizabeth Thomason Byars are buried in the Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Cemetery, on the old Lee Highway 11 between Abingdon and Marion, Virginia, our George and Sarah C. Byars are not buried there. Glade Spring Presbyterian Church was founded in 1772...The Byars Family owned a large tract of land on both sides of the Old Lee Highway, now Interstate 81 in Smyth and Washington Counties, Virginia."
