Nils Handeland married Synneva Bauge, the daughter of Jo and Marie Bauge and took her name when he moved onto her family's farm. They had 6 sons while living in Norway.
In 1861, they and their 6 sons emigrated to the U.S.A. The boys were Jo - 19, Thor - 16, Axel - 14, John - 11, Ole - 7, and Lars - 2.
Later in Illinois, 2 more children were born: Nels was born in 1863 and Marie Malinda Bauge was born in 1865. Marie was called "Mary." After moving to Iowa in 1866, they built a cabin near Cambridge.
One boy had died in infancy.
