Nils was born Jan. 16, 1804 to Jo and Malinda at Handelon, Norway and was baptized in the Fjellberg Church. The family later moved to Gravedahl.
Nils Handeland married Synneva Bauge, the daughter of Jo and Marie Bauge and took her name when he moved onto her family's farm. They had 6 sons while living in Norway.
In 1861, they and their 6 sons emigrated to the U.S.A. The boys were Jo - 19, Thor - 16, Axel - 14, John - 11, Ole - 7, and Lars - 2.
Later in Illinois, 2 more children were born: Nels was born in 1863 and Marie Malinda Bauge was born in 1865. Marie was called "Mary." After moving to Iowa in 1866, they built a cabin near Cambridge.
One boy had died in infancy.
