A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Rosa Rhyne and Coatsworth Pinckney Abernathy. Three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death: Carl Abernathy, Olin Abernathy, Clayton Abernathy, Ethel A. Cherry, Edith A. Parnell, Edna A. Rhyne.
She is survived by several nieces,nephews and many great nieces and great nephews.
A graduate of Lees McRae College and Western Carolina Teachers College, she taught elementary school in Mt. Holly and then North Belmont for a total of 33 years.
Geneva was a lifelong member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, joining when she was 9 years old. She taught an Adult Sunday School class and was involved in Women's Missionary Union and many other church activities throughout the years. Geneva enjoyed traveling to Europe and Asia, attending the Baptist World Alliance in Tokyo, Japan in 1970.
A memorial graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Gardens, Mt. Holly with the Rev. Tom Kin-man, pastor of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 3717 Hickory Grove Road, Gastonia, North Carolina 28056.
