She spent much time in her childhood with her grandparents Carney from whom she learned about her Lord Jesus. She had a rock-solid faith that couldn't be shaken in spite of the many tribulations faced in her eighty-five years.
In the early 70s, she traveled with a tour group to communist China where she smuggled in a suitcase full of Bibles, forty-four to be exact. Going through the rigorous Chinese customs, her bags were waived through without examination and the Bibles were delivered safely.
For nearly fifty years she was married to R. W. Smith, Jr., now deceased. Awaiting her arrival in heaven were her parents, her brothers Bobby and Kenneth, and her sister Jenny Lee. Her youngest brother Gerald survives her.
She was the mother of Margaret, David and Isaiah, grandmother of Kelly and Tanya, great grandmother of Samantha.
Having suffered a major stroke in 1999, she was cared for by her son Isaiah, her daughter Margaret and granddaughter Kelly, with whom she lived in her final years. Smaller strokes and other illnesses took her health but she kept her faith without wavering.
Her family thanks Dr. Jack K. Wilson, Jr. for his many years of gentle care. We especially thank Jackie Page who loved Miss Annie and helped care for her for so many years, and to past caregivers Barbara Robinson and Crystal Royal.
We are indebted to Dr. Gonzales and the kind staff at Davis Healthcare Center for their loving care of her these last six months. Monica and Rosa, you are angels. We also thank the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their assistance these last few days.
We loved her so very much and are thankful that we had that last precious hour with her. I hope that on some level she knew we were there with her as she gently and peacefully slipped away at 2:17 a.m. on Monday, June 14, 2010, 85 years, 11 months and 12 days after her birth in Wilmington, NC.
