FERNANDEZ, Jewel Estelle Bottoms
died Nov. 18, 2005, in Longmont, Colo. She was 85 years old. Jewel Was born Aug. 17, 1920, in Athen, Ala., to Ary and Jewel (Mason) Bottoms. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Salem College, W.Va., in 1940. Jewel married Emilio Fernandez Jr. in Logan, Ohio on Feb. 19, 1943. Jewel completed her education by receiving her Master of Arts degree in Education from Pepperdine University in 1977. Jewel established the Commercial Foods program at Antelope Valley High School, where she taught Home Economics until her retirement in 1980. She moved to Longmont, Colo., in 1996. Jewel loved to create through cooking, sewing, quilting, and crafts, and dedicated her life to teaching others to also create. Jewel is preceded in death by her husband, Emilio Fernandez Jr. She is survived by her sister, Almira Tye, and her brother, James David Bottoms; daughters Eloise Cantrell and Jewel Wellborn; her sons Jay Fernandez and Jerry Fernandez; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at the Lancaster Cemetery District. For additional information contact Jay Fernandez
