Civil War: Company I, 7th California Infantry

Alphonso G. Farnham enlisted as a private at Nevada City, California, October 11, 1864, and was mustered into Company I, 7th California Infantry, November 17. Private Farnham was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco March 31, 1866. He appears as a single miner residing in Lander County in the 1875 Nevada State Census. Alphonso G. Farnham appears in the 1890 Veterans Census as a resident of Sheridan, Sheridan County, Wyoming, where he filed for a Civil War veteran's pension July 15, 1891. He received application No. 1,038,998 and certificate No. 1,128,799. Alphonso re-filed for his pension March 9, 1907. He was a teamster residing at Evanston, Uinta County, Wyoming, when he was admitted to the National Soldiers' Home at Leavenworth, Kansas, February 12, 1908. His home record indicates he was a widower, 5 ft. 8 in. tall, with dark hair and gray eyes, and that he had no known next-of-kin. The record shows that Alphonso died at the Leavenworth Soldiers' Home January 20, 1928, and was buried in the National Cemetery in Section 35, Row 3, Site 24. The date inscribed on his headstone is incorrect.
