Austin Richard Dent, 86, died Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 25,1999, at his home in Ona, W.Va. Dent was a retired welding engineer and is survived by his wife, Lillianne; his daughter, Marilyn Morgan of Sandy, Utah; his granddaughters, Lynn Morgan of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Lori Flood and her husband, Chuck, of Oberlin, Ohio; two stepsons, T.R. Massey and his wife, Angela, and son, Ryan, of Columbus, Ohio, and Tyler Massey and his wife, Tara, and daughter, Lily Grace; and his stepdaughter, Claire Massey, all of Huntington. He also had two great-grandsons, Cody and Campbell. He is also survived by a very special brother-in-law, George P. Davis III of Fairmont, W.Va.; and a special sister-in-law, Deb Swanson and her husband, Jerry, of Beckley, W.Va. He was born in Berwick, Pa., on May 19,1913, the youngest son of Ralph Ivy Dent and Florence Hunsinger Dent. His first trade after formal education was meat cutting. Following a move to Philadelphia, he became involved with welding and took a job with the American Car and Foundry. Following World War II, he moved to St. Charles, Mo., then to Huntington where he researched, among other things, a rail car delivery system for nuclear missiles. He began to work for Wilson Welding in 1971, where he was a welding engineer and customer rep.
After retiring from welding a decade later, he and his wife, Lillianne, founded the Carpet Ladies, a retail flooring store that they operated in Barboursville until 1993. He worked at McDonald's at the Huntington Mall for the last six years where he liked to say he did "P.R. work." During his life, Austin was a member of the Elks Club, Moose Club, a 32nd Degree Mason, a volunteer fireman and played semi-pro football. He was active in the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Ona for 25 years and sang in the choir. Throughout his life, he proved himself a jack of all trades, accomplished carpenter and a man willing to take on new challenges.
Austin donated his body to medical research at the Marshall University School of Medicine Human Gift Registry. A memorial service, in his honor, was held on Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, at Bethesda United Methodist Church, Yates Crossing, Ona, W.Va. The family has requested that contributions be made to Bethesda United Methodist Church or the Ronald McDonald House in Austin's memory.
