Civil War: Company E, 1st California Infantry

Samuel Hancock Aspell enrolled and mustered-in as Sergeant, Company E, 1st California Infantry, by First Lieutenant John Kellogg at Presidio of San Francisco, California, August 26, 1861. At enlistment he was described as age 41 years, that he was born at New Orleans, Louisiana, and that his occupation was a Printer. During his service he was reduced to the ranks. Private Aspell was left at New San Diego Barracks, San Diego, California, on account of disability and sickness by Captain Thomas L. Roberts when his company departed the Post en route to Fort Yuma, California, March 14, 1862. Privat Aspell died of consumption in the hospital at New San Diego Barracks April 11, 1862.
