Bill was the second child of eight children born to William R. Dollase and his wife, Martha Tripke. His childhood nickname was "Chirp", and he loved to play all kinds of sports. He played baseball as a child and was a championship bowler and horseshoe pitcher as an adult. He was married to Mabel Zimmerman in 1936 and had one son. He died of a heart attack while doing one of his favorite things, pitching horseshoes.
