Royal was married in Maine to Alice Davis. According to an 1831 Copeland family Bible belonging to Royal Copeland and found in the Dexter Area Museum in Dexter, Michigan, Royal was born on 11 Aug. 1791 and died on 13 Jan. 1861 (which closely matches his gravestone, which says he was 70 years and 6 months of age when he died on 13 Jan. 1861.) The 1860 U.S. Census claims Royal was born in New Hampshire but a copy of a State of Maine vital records claims he was born on 11 Aug, 1790 in Dexter, Penobscot, Maine (perhaps a typographical error on the birth year as the document was typed from an old handwritten record). To determine whether the Maine document or the family bible is correct, one would need to view the original documents to be sure, as it is possible that the wrong year may have been transcribed on the typewritten birth record or incorrectly entered in the family bible. In addition, lending credence to the possibility that both 1791 and New Hampshire are correct, is a 1926 letter written by Royal and Alice's son, Roscoe, to his children, in which he writes that his father "was born in 1791 so he was about 12 years old when they moved from {Washington} New Hamp ... and commenced to clear off the old farm in Dexter, Maine."

- Royal Copeland's family bible and Roscoe Copeland's letter(s) are held at the Dexter Area Historical Society and Museum in Dexter, Michigan.
