Otis J. Dimick was a prominent Rock Island businessman. Two of his children, Eddie and Josie, died of diphtheria on the same day, October 22, 1878. The family lived near the cemetery, and when they visited Eddie's and Josie's grave, their dog walked with them. After the first few visits, the dog began visiting the cemetery alone. He would arrive early in the morning and remain at the grave until dark. When the dog died, the family placed a statue of him at the grave, in honor of his devotion.
