When Douglas arrived in Vietnam 6 December 1967, he was assigned to D Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade, USARV. D Company was on a patrol, 3 kilometers west northwest of the Mo Duc Airfield, when Douglas detonated a hostile bouncing Betty mine. He was med-evac and died at a military hospital of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body from the explosion.
Survived by his parents, Mr & Mrs William Washington of Route #2, Box 238, Waterproof, Louisiana.
