"After a brief illness, Mrs. Lorin V. Murphy died at her home in Richfield, April 17, 1889, at the age of 32 years. Mrs. Murphy's maiden name was Eva J. Bliss. She was the oldest daughter of William and Celestia Bliss of Hartwick, N. Y., and a niece of Mr. Sanford T. Bliss of this village. For eleven years her home was with her aunt, Mrs. H. K. Jarvis in Middlefield. During this time she was, as pupil and teacher, connected with the Cooperstown Union School. In 1873 she received the first Regents' preliminary certificate ever issued to the school; and was the 'Averell Gold Medal' scholar for the year 1875, being the second one to receive that honor. In June, 1883, she married Mr. Lorin V. Murphy of Middlefield, since which time, with few interruptions, she has been engaged in teaching, the past three years in the Richfield Union School. Her husband and two children survive her. Mrs. Murphy had a bright and strong intellect, a quiet but dignified manner, and was notably unselfish in character. A Richfield school official, in a private letter, says of her, 'We have lost one of our best teachers and a noble woman.' The funeral service was held at Richfield, 11 A. M., April 19. Interment at Lakewood Cemetery." ["The Freeman's Journal" (Cooperstown, NY), Apr. 26, 1889, Page 3] -- thanks to Kathryn Hill for the additional information.
