Baptized in Yeovil, Somerset, England the son of Frederick Johnson and Kate Spicer Johnson. He lost two brothers in WWI. All three brothers are memorialized on the Swanage War memorial. John is memorialized on the Basra Memorial in Iraq.
2nd Lieutenant John Frederic Johnson was commissioned into the 9th Battalion of the King's Own Lancaster Regiment on 25 March 1915 but was attached to the 6th Battalion, 38th Infantry Brigade when the Battalion arrived in Gallipoli in August of 1915. Following the evacuation of Gallipoli the Battalion fought in Mesopotamia where John was killed in action at Sanna-I-Yat on April 9, 1916.
