Mrs. Elliott H. Stutters, the former Ruth Baker, who was born and reared in Traer, died in Memorial hospital at Clarion May 13, 1970 after a brief illness following a coronary attack.

Ruth was a daughter of Dwight E. and Mary L. Baker, and her father was operator of the D. E. Baker Lumber company many years and built the brick building owned by the Farmers Lumber company. Ruth was graduated from Traer high school in 1915. She attended the Palmer School of Business at Cedar Rapids.

After graduation, in September of 1916 she took employment as a stenographer with the Welch-Cook' company, wholesale house, at Cedar Rapids.

On November 28, 1917, she was married in Cedar Rapids to Elliott H. Stutters. Mr. Stutters had been employed in Traer a few years at the greenhouse of Curtis H. Thomas, florist. The couple went to Clarion immediately after their marriage and have made their home there since Mr. Stutters operated a florist business in Clarion several years, but for several years has been employed in the Clarion post office.

Surviving are her husband, one son, Homer E. Stutters, and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ruth Smith, and two grandsons, Thomas E. and Steven M. Smith, and Ruth's brother, Ralph P. Baker, now retired in Waterloo after many years as a traveling salesman for a large lumber company.

One son, James, died in infancy, and one grandson, James Smith preceded her in death.
Mrs. Stutters was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ at Clarion, was active many years as a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Women's Fellowship of that church. She was a longtime member of the Progress club of Clarion, had been a member of the Eastern Star order 55 years, and served as worthy matron in 1933. She was also a member of the Past Matrons club.

She participated in the 50th anniversary reunion of her Traer high school graduating class at the Homecoming weekend here several years ago. She was a highly regarded resident of the Wright county town, where she spent all of her married years.

Her funeral services were held in the Clarion Congregational church May 15, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Gerald Eslinger. Interment was in Clarion's Evergreen cemetery.
