Major Edward William Crawfurd Ridgeway, 2nd King George's Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles), Indian Army. He was the son of Colonel Richard Kirby Ridgeway VC, CB, and Emily Maria Ridgeway (nee Fallan). Baptised on 4 Feb 1877 in St James's Church, Delhi, India. Educated at Bedford School, Bedford, Bedfordshire. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Indian Army (unattached list) as a 2nd Lieutenant on 22 Jan 1896. Promoted to Lieutenant on 22 Apr 1898, to Captain on 22 Jan 1905 and to Major on 22 Jan 1914. He joined the 1st Battalion 2nd King George's Own Gurkha Rifles on 13 Apr 1897. He served with them in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India in 1897 with the Mohmand Field Force (Medal with two Clasps). He deployed with the 1st Battalion 2nd King George's Own Gurkha Rifles to France in October 1914 and had been rushed to the front to help stem the German assaults near Neuve Chapelle, where they were to stay until the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915. They had a significant role in the battle and the Indian Corps was then vital in defending Ypres after the German Gas attacks in April and May 1915. They then moved to the Mesopotamia front as British service battalions became available for the Western Front in late 1915. The Battalion arrived in Mesopotamia in 1916, assisting in the fall of Baghdad. He was appointed as a Companion of the Order of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) [London Gazette 3 Jun 1916]. He died on 23 Feb 1917. He is commemorated on the Basra War Memorial.
