In April, 1837, the Arthur family moved to Burlington, Vermont. John Arthur jr. worked as a clerk in Dr. Robert Moody's drug and hardware store until 1841, when Dr. Moody died. John then partnered with Luther M. Hagar to operate the same business until 1861.
In 1861, Arthur began working for the United States customs service as a special deputy collector for the port of Burlington. He continued in that position until a year before his death.
John and Harriet Fowler Hall married on June 6, 1848, in Burlington, Vermont. They had six children.
