LUNENBURG -- Warren E. Ward 95, of Lunenburg, died Saturday February 1, 2014 in Health Alliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.

He was born April 23,1918 in Lunenburg, MA the son of Matthew F. and Lafay M. (Hodgdon) Ward. He leaves 3 daughters, Sue Paquin and her husband Al of Leominster, Karen Martin and her husband Bob of Leominster; and Lois Steinmann and her husband Jim of Rindge, NH. He had 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

His wife of 59 Years, Constance D. (Martel) Ward died in 2003. His 6 brothers, Francis, Carl, Leon, Alvin, Matthew, and William and 2 sisters Amy M. Barnsley and Lafay Ogilvie predeceased him.

Warren graduated from Lunenburg High School in 1937, where he was the Class President and an Eagle Scout. Warren served in the United States Navy from 1938-1946. He made neutrality patrols in the Caribbean onboard the USS Fairfax and coastal patrols onboard the USS Jacob Jones. He was at gunnery school when the USS Jacob Jones was sunk by a German U-boat. He was reassigned to PT Boats and deployed to ADAK, AK. On his return to Melville, RI, as an instructor, he was commissioned as an Ensign. At the end of World War II, Warren transferred to the Naval Reserve, deploying to Pusan Korea in 1952. He served in the reserves until 1979 when he retired at the rank of LCDR. He went on to work for the US Postal Service for many years and retired as Post Master for the Town of Lunenburg. In retirement, he worked part time at Chapdelaine Truck Center.

He was a member of Nashoba Valley MOAA Chapter; on the Board of Directors for Nashoba Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America; a member and past president of the Lunenburg-Townsend Chapter of Rotary International; a Co-chair of the Lunenburg 4H Committee; and a Plank Owner for the Navy Memorial.

WARD -- A funeral service for Warren will be held on Thursday February 6, 2014 at 11AM in the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., Leominster. Burial with military honors will be in the spring in North Cemetery in Lunenburg MA. Calling hours in the funeral home are Wednesday evening February 5, 2014 are from 4pm-7pm.In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Lunenburg Rescue Fund, 655 Mass Ave., Lunenburg, MA 01462, or to the charity of one's choice.
