The note on the certificate for Abigail states that she died from "Hysterical psychosis exhaustion of" in the Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital in Harrisburg.
Personally, I believe she died of a "Broken Heart" resulting from the deaths of her Father when she was very young, the deaths of two of her three babies, with only one son, Charles Wetter Springer, who lived; and the young death of her dear eldest sister, Anna Rebecca Plankinton Parker.
That is an excessive amount of heartache to bear, and I believe it caused the mental and physical breakdown from depression. She was only aged 45 years, 8 months and 15 days.
You are singing with the Angels now, Great Grand Aunt Abbie! Love you!
Great Grand Niece, Janet
Abigail was Judy's and my Paternal Great Grand Aunt; she was our Grandmother, Lillie (Lillian) Dell Parker's (Adoptive Name Tompkins)[M1 John Kendig Handwork (who died young) and M2 Lynn Henry "Hank" LeBaron] Maternal Aunt, who was the sister of Lillie's Mother, our Great Grandmother, Anna Rebecca Plankinton Parker, who died young from "Consumption"/Tuberculosis. Anna also had several of her children die young. One, Hattie, died tragically from Pneumonia, after Rebecca had died. Our dear Great Grandfather Joseph's heart was also in jeopardy of breaking...perhaps it did.
Our Grandmother Lillian and her younger sister (Hattie Ingram Parker ~ Adopted by Joaquin B. and Kate (nee Dutton) Matlack of Sugartown, PA), had been adopted after Anna's death; there were still two older daughters, Laura May and Emma Webster Parker at home.
Their Father, Joseph Filmore Parker remarried and had two more children, plus Step Children. Joseph's Father, Joseph Parker who was from England, was killed in the U.S. Civil War fighting for the Union. A family note states he "died three days after the Battle of Gettysburgh" (original spelling). I have found no proof of this time frame as yet.
That left young Joseph and his Mother, Sarah Ellen (nee Balentine) Parker to "fend for themselves" in a time of great war in our beloved Country. Ellen and her brothers had been torn apart by their Parents' dual deaths at early ages and placed in either Foster Homes or an Orphanage.
Sarah Ellen's eldest brother, Reverend Alexander Hamilton Balentine, Sr. was a Princeton Seminary graduate and became a Presbyterian Missionary in Indian Territory to the Five Civilized Tribes in the 1840s-1876, when he succumbed to Pneumonia in February of that latter year. He married Nancy Anna Hoyt, a daughter of Dr. Milo Ard Hoyt, MD (1800-1863) from New England and Lydia Lowrey Hoyt (1803-1862) from Indian Territory {Oklahoma}. Nancy Anna was a Granddaughter of Cherokee Chief Tsa Tsi Agi Li George (Major) Lowrey Jr. 1770–1852 and Lucinda Tashliski Lucy Benge 1776–1846.
