MYRTLE DEAN WOODARD was born to Overton and Gertrude Woodard in Nashville, Tennessee. She attended elementary school and graduated from high school there.
On February 28, 1936 she was married to Samuel F. Ensley, and to this union two daughters were born.
While in Nashville, Myrtle was an active member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church where she served as President of the Senior Usher Board for many years, and was a member of the Junior and Senior Galeda Classes.
After thirty years with the Nashville City Health Department, she retired and, with her husband, Samuel, moved to Seattle in 1969. She united with Washington Park Baptist Church, pastored by his son-in-law, the Rev. Spencer Thomas, Jr.
"She worked faithfully with the Missionary Society there until her death. She was affectionately known as 'Mother Ensley' and 'Granny Gran' to the many friends she met along the way. She was a member of the Seattle Area Deaconesses, the Idell Vertner Orthopedic Guild, American Baptist Women and Church Women United.
"She leaves family and many, many friends with wonderful memories, including her husband, Samuel F. Ensley; two daughter, Juanita Thomas and Shirley Young; three granddaughters, Valda Thomas and Margo Young of Seattle, and Sonia Taylor of Gardner, Massachusetts; and a sister, Nell Roberts of Nashville, Tennessee. Her special family includes grandson-in-law, Timothy Taylor; sons-in-law, Spencer Thomas, Jr. and Thomas Young; cousins, Robert and Carla Cook of St. Louis, Missouri; and God-children, Herbert and Ann Fisher of Tacoma, Washington."
