A graveside service was held at Green Haven Cemetery on Coyle Road, west of Stillwater, at 11 a.m. May 22, arranged by Strode Funeral Home, with the Rev. Deb Meinke officiating.

The Cushing American Legion Post honor guard was present to fire a tribute. A celebration of Paul's life will be 1:30 p.m.June 1, at the Unitarian-Universalist Church, 320 S. Stallard, Stillwater, conducted by Rev. Meinke. A family memorial service will be held Aug 3, in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada.

Paul was born on May 11, 1953, in Paris, France, where his parents were students of art and music. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jon David, and Peter Jay, and survived by his parents, his brother Marc, and many cousins in California, Canada and Iceland. Paul spent his first four years in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, then attended first grade in Lindsborg, Kan. The last move was to Stillwater, where he attended public school, graduating from C.E. Donart High School. Paul excelled in cross country athletics, but his first love and aptitude was music, beginning the cornet in junior high, then trumpet in high school. Paul attended college as a music major first at Emporia State Teachers College, Kan., then at Oklahoma State University then University of Oklahoma, Norman. The last college he attended was the University of North Texas, Denton, where he was lead trumpet in the Six O'clock Band and principal trumpet in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

In 1975 Paul began his career as a freelance trumpet player usually as lead trumpet. He joined the U.S. Army in 1988, moving to Atlanta, Ga., where he served as a professional trumpet player. He married Lisa Nichols, a musician, at that time. Paul was recruited for service in the prestigious United States Military Academy Jazz Knights at West Point in 1991 as lead trumpeter. In 1994, he moved to Arlington, W.V., to join the United States Army Blues Band as lead trumpeter as well as playing for various military ceremonies. There he met and married Jeanette Hicks, a singer who is heard in some of Paul's recordings.

For the next few years he played with prestigious groups, i.e., The Temptations, Barnum and Bailey Circus, Ice Capades, Robert Goulet, Bob Hope, Bob Newhart, Mickey Rooney, Alan King, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and others. In 2004, Paul played with the Tuxedo Park Orchestra, in the well-known "In the Mood, Live!" band, and as lead trumpet in the Artie Shaw Orchestra. In the period leading to 2009 he was with the 257th Army Band National Guard Unit, where he was principal trumpet and section leader in the concert band, lead trumpet in their Jazz Big Band, as well as trumpeter for ceremonial occasions. One of his most recent engagements was as first trumpet with Doc Scanlon's Imperial Palms Orchestra.

Paul was a loving, helpful son to his parents and a loyal and faithful brother to Marc, now the last of four sons. Anyone with access to Facebook may read many heartfelt tributes to Paul as a kind, gentle human being with a sense of humor, as well as an excellent musician. He will be sorely missed by his family, Canadian cousins, and musician friends everywhere, one of whom wrote, "Paul was a class act and a joy to tour and perform with … a great talent and a very kind man, he will be missed."

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in memory of Paul du-Bois to the Stillwater High School Orchestra or Band, 1224 N Husband St, Stillwater, OK 74075.
