The eldest child of John and Caroline Hoffmann, she and all her sisters were weavers at the Louisville Kentucky Woolen Mill.

Mary wed cigar maker Anthony Schmitz at Louisville on April 5, 1899. On the following year's census, they are recorded along with their first child, Robert, living with Mary's mother and siblings John, Joseph, Amelia and Emma at 2036 Logan Street.

Mary's later children were Frank, Anthony, Marie and Henry.

She passed away at her residence, 1013 Vine Street, from the complications of chronic myocarditis.
