John Joseph Hard came to Texas at the age of 18 from his home in New Jersey to join his mother's brother, Henry Ward. John Hard was a goldsmith by trade. He taught the first school in Springtown. John Hard was a captain in the Confederate Army and in 1870 moved with his family to Mansfield, TX. With Indian raids occurring with such frequency, he wised to be near Fort Worth for the safety of his family. John Hard was one of the organizers of the Mansfield Masonic Lodge and continued to live in the Wyatt's Chapel neighborhood until his death.
