Elmer was the son of William T. Etheridge and Fannie Emeric Dail. He was a Commercial Fisherman, a farmer and a carpenter. His first wife was Gertrude Sawyer and with her he had two sons Robert and Don. His second wife Lila Mae Morton was the love of his life and she had a daughter Shirley Gladys when they married. They had together six girls and one boy. Naomi, Sadie Maie, Barbara Jean, Patsy Ann, Patricia Anne, Durwood Ray, and Lila Marie.
