Roy Wilson Spencer, age 80, of Corpus Christi, Texas, died Thursday, July 7,2005, with great courage and peace. He was the son of the late Lowery Perrin Spencer and Charlotte Hartman of Brownsville, Texas. He was born August 15,1924, in Robstown, Texas, and grew up in Brownsville. He resided in Corpus Christi for the past 36 years. He graduated from Brownsville High School and Texas Southmost College where he participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He excelled in all sports. He coached Little League Baseball teams in Louisiana in 1957-58. He was active in many fund raising and community activities. His hobbies included sailing, golfing, gardening, art, refinishing furniture, model ship building and computers. He served as a signalman in the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres of Operation during World War II. Returning from the servie, he accepted positions with Standard Oil of Indiana in Brownsville, Texas, Continental Oil Company in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Amoco Chemical Comapany in Joliet, Illinois, and retired from Coastal Corporation in Corpus Christi in 1982. Roy Spencer was a Christian and a member of First Baptist Church, Corpus Christi and the Maco Bible Study Class. He worked as a volunteer with the Food Committee, First Baptist Church and was a member of the First Baptist Art Class. Spencer thoroughly enjoyed helping others and participating in volunteer work in many areas. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Morris, Illinois. He is survived by his wife, Martha Nethery Harmon Spencer; a daughter, Susan Spencer of Carrolton, Texas, a step-daughter, Lorraine Harmon Sengler of Cape Coral, Florida, two step-grandchildren, John and Stephanie Sengler of Austin, Texas, two brothers, Lowery Spencer of Sebastopol, California and James Spencer of Robstown, Texas. Memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 3115 Ocean Drive, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 13 with Dr. Bubba Stahl officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. at Seaside Memorial Park on Wednesday, July 13. In lieu of the usual remembrances, the family encourages contributions to the First Baptist Church, 3115 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christi, Texas, 78404, or a favorite charity of your choice. Roy's smiling face, his gentle spirit and his willingness to help others will continue to grace his memory.
