James was born to Fred and Mary (Walker) Fleener. James lived in Texas before moving to Rush Springs in 1984. He worked in the oil field as a driller. James married Sharon Stringfellow on July 14, 1984, in Rush Springs. He loved to play golf, watch football and spend time with his family. He was a Mason and a member of the Baptist Church.

James was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Fred Fleener, Jr.

Survivors include his wife ,Sharon Fleener, of the home; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Fred and Ida Fleener of Odessa, Texas, and Jimmy Fleener of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and John Duffy of Odessa, Texas; three grandchildren, Carrie and Cory O’Neal, Fred Fleener IV, and Whitney Faith Fleener; two great-grandchildren, Jordyn O’Neal and Logan O’Neal; and a sister, Brenda Cyr of Arizona. Other surviving relatives are Michael Lackey, Jennifer Houde and John Lackey.

Services were held Oct. 19, at the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs, with Cliff Werhan officiating. Burial was held at the Westview Cemetery in Rush Springs under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs.
